Love Finds You In Mackinac Island, Michigan

Love Finds You In Mackinac Island, Michigan
Melanie Dobson

As the Gilded Age comes to a close, Elena Bissette's once-wealthy family has nearly lost its fortune. The Bissettes still own a home on fashionable Mackinac Island, where they will spend one last summer in the hope of introducing Elena to a wealthy suitor. But Elena is repulsed by the idea of marrying for money.

Quickly tiring of the extravagant balls, Elena spends most evenings escaping back into Mackinac's rugged forest. There she meets Chase, a handsome laborer who shares her love for the night sky. The two begin to meet in secret at an abandoned lighthouse, where they work together to solve a mystery buried in the pages of a tattered diary.

As Elena falls in love with Chase, her mother relentlessly contrives to introduce her to Chester Darrington, the island's most eligible bachelor. Marriage to the elusive millionaire would solve the Bissettes' financial woes, and Elena is torn between duty and love.

Book Review

One of the things I like about the "Love Finds You" series is that they include a historical element in them.   This is Melanie Dobson's fifth book in this 52 book American history series which is being written by many different authors.  This book is centered around Mackinac Island.

Several of my last reads have centered around plot lines of women who have been pledged to marry all for the sake of saving their family's fortune and/or reputation.   I am so thankful that times have changed because I cannot imagine marrying under such circumstances.

In this book, Elena is a young woman who grew up in a wealthy family.   They summered on Mackinac Island.    However, the glitz and glam were not nearly as attractive to her as exploring the forest.    She discovered a lighthouse which became her escape.    This lighthouse became a refuge after her parents insisted on introducing her to society in hopes of finding her a husband that would help secure their family's future.

She meets a young man during one of her late night escapes to her lighthouse who shares her love of learning.   She shares the lighthouse's secret diary.     The diary is one of my favorite parts of the book because it is a background and love story of the Mackinac Island history.

Dobson does a great job of weaving all of the paths of this storyline together.  You will hate to see the last page of this book arrive!

Thank you to LitFuse Publishing for providing me a complimentary copy of this book for the purpose of review.   All views are mine alone.

I enjoyed this one but didn't love it. I liked the twist that Elena was actually falling for the man her mother picked out and that they met so late in the book but it reads more like a detailed historical than romance.
