Feeling missed...
After being gone for about four hours to a wedding, I walked through the back door tired, hot and with achy feet. As soon as I rounded the kitchen corner I heard the screams of my two boys saying, "Mom!" as they ran to give me hugs and kisses! It is so nice to be missed.
Being protected...
We were coming to an intense scene in our Alex Rider movie (a teen version of James Bond). Right when Alex shot the pilot with a dart, my guy reached over and rubbed my hand saying, "Don't be scared, Mom. He didn't kill him. He just made him go to sleep for a little while."
Being treated like a lady...
At the grocery store, the gentlemen asks if he can take out our groceries and Big Guy says, "No, thank you, I will take them out for my Mom."
Big Guy always opens my car door for me and waits for me to get in completely before he shuts it.
Having your honor defended...
While vacationing at the beach, my Daddy was talking with the boys. "You know," Daddy said, "your mom was single before she married your Daddy." "Don't you dare say something like that about my Mom!" said Little Guy.
Having your heart melt...
When you see your son take off his cap and place it over his heart at a memorial garden honoring the fallen firefighters from 2001.
like no other feeling in the world!

What Men Do?
We are packing Hubby and Little Guy to leave to go to Lad/Dad camp with our church tomorrow afternoon.
"Little guy, go get four pairs of matching shorts and shirts."
"Mom, this is a father's and son's weekend. We don't have to match! Matching is not manly. When girls go away for the weekend they like to match. But when guys go away if they want to wear swim trunks with underwear on their head they can and nobody says anything.... that is what men do!"
(This is his first camp.... where does he come up with this stuff?)

"Now The World Don't Move To the Beat Of Just One Drum"
The other night we were flipping through the channels and saw the Jon & Kate Plus 8 television show. We stopped for a few minutes because they decided to go to a local pottery shop. I thought, "This should be interesting --- that lady is going to freak out." If you watch you know she is a little OCD about messes.
After a few minutes we switched the stations, but not before the boys said, "Hey! We haven't been to the pottery store in a while. Can we go tomorrow?"
Sounded way better than laundry or chores so off we went. Our favorite pottery shop is Different Strokes. The first thirty minutes we are there was spent trying to decide what to paint. (It is kind of like me and shoe shopping... so many choices!)
Little Guy spotted a shelf full of crosses and said, "Mom, I could paint a cross to put on your new wall of crosses." I tried to direct him to a small cross, but his eyes were glazed over (yes, I know that is a pottery pun). He was gazing at a huge ornamental cross at the back of the shelf. A very, very, very detailed cross that would take a professional hours to paint. (Hence the photo because I knew you wouldn't believe me.)

Let me explain... most kids would slap paint on their pottery and be ready for the next piece. Not my boys. They make the most of their painting experience. Painstakingly picking out their pieces, paint colors and using just the right brushes. This is not just painting. It is art.
Meanwhile Big Guy struggled for a while with his choice, but finally picked out a plate with a beautiful cross detail in the center. I was so excited because I really loved that plate and in Big Guy's hands it would turn out amazing.

For the next two hours the boys were in painting heaven. The only time I heard them talk was when Big Guy said he wished he had brought his iPod because he thought it would help him concentrate better.
Me? Don't ask me why I didn't think to bring a book!
They were so beautiful when they were finished that I just can't wait to see them when they come out of the kiln and are ready to be picked up. I'm already eyeing a spot to put them on my wall.

Having A Fire Drill!
Little Guy is in Fire Academy this week. A lot of his friends from school are there and they are all having a blast. Apparently if you are a "junior firefighter" in training there is homework at night. You would have to know our Little Guy to know how seriously he takes this homework. He obeys Chief Hill to the letter of the law. If Chief Hill told him to burn down our house as part of training exercise, he would do it. Sooooo, last night his homework was to put our family through a full blown fire drill.
I know what you are thinking. Just push the button on the smoke alarm and everybody get out. NOOOO! First, Little Guy insists that Chief Hill said we were supposed to alert the fire department that we were going to have a drill. It took 15 minutes to explain to him that we were not going to set off our house alarm system and we didn't need to call the fire department. This really frustrated him. You should have seen his aggravation level rise when he told us that we EACH needed a lanyard with a flashlight, whistle and a house key. Somehow I didn't have that for each of us at bedtime, but I did have enough for Little Guy to have it for the drill and I DID promise to get it for all of us. He was sure I was ruining the entire drill at this point.
We gather everyone, including my nephew, to tell them that we are about to have a fire drill. Everyone goes to their places in the house. *BEEP!* *BEEP!* I jump up and head for the front door. As soon as I hit my bedroom door I see Little Guy crawling toward me with his flashlight pointing at me, screeching his whistle saying, "Get down! You're in the black smoke!" Apparently I don't get down fast enough because he starts screaming, "You're dying! You're dying!" I get down as I open the front door, but Little Guy is still screaming, "Get down! You are in the smoke! You are dying! You are dying!" because Big Guy and Nephew have just walked up behind us.
I crawl out the front door just in time to see my husband strolling down the driveway with his flashlight and one of our neighbors walking her dog. She must have thought we were insane. I so wanted to say, "We're not crazy! We're having a fire drill!!"

Before You Dump That Coffee!!

I hate to waste stuff. Sometimes I have coffee left over if I decide not to drink my second cup, but I hate to pour it down the sink. So, I did a little reading and there is actually quite a few things that you can do with leftover coffee!
1. Use it to marinate ribs.
2. My Mom has always added a cup of coffee to her roast when cooking it. YUM!
3. Use in making BBQ sauce
4. Violets are acid loving plants. Water your violets and other acid loving plants with coffee.
5. Make frappucinos (recipe below)
6. Dip paper into coffee and let dry -- it will have an antique look
7. If you have dark furniture, use a Q-tip and rub across scratches.
8. Make a mixture of grounds and coffee and pour around plants. This will keep out slugs. Just make sure your plants can take the acid.
9. If all else fails, make ice cubes to add to your coffee when it is super hot.
Frappucino Recipe
Mix:
2 cups cold coffee
3 cups of whole milk
3 cups of half and half (or heavy cream)
1 cup of sugar
2 tbs good chocolate syrup like ghiradelli
1/4 cup flavored coffee syrup in vanilla, or whatever
Mix well. Chill for 1 hour for best results.

Testing.... Coconut Juice
My Little Guy loves to try new things. Once he decides he wants to try something he won't quit talking about it. About two years ago he discovered coconut soda at the store. He found it in the Mexican section of our grocery and he LOVES it. Now, my husband who loves coconut detests it, but Little Guy thinks it is the greatest treat when I buy him a couple of bottles and put them in the refrigerator. A few weeks ago he saw a can of coconut juice and he just decided he wanted to try it. So when we were buying snacks I told him that we would buy a can for him to try. When we poured it into the cup he was very surprised that there were little pieces of coconut floating in the cup.

The moment of truth....

"Mom, this is definitely not coconut soda! Do they really drink this stuff on Survivor?"

So where is the can of coconut juice? Here... in the door of the refrigerator. You know how I feel about wasting. So any ideas on what you can cook with coconut juice?

Mad About You

Eighteen years ago I gripped onto my Daddy's arm and waited for the doors of the sanctuary to open. "Walk slow, Daddy, I want to remember this moment forever." I said. Once those doors opened and I saw your face I couldn't wait to join you. After the ceremony was over my Daddy teased me that I nearly dragged/ran him down the aisle to meet you.
We made traditional vows... love and cherish, honor and obey, richer or poorer... but one vow that you made to me was to make me laugh every day. You have kept that promise and it has made our marriage all the stronger. Not necessarily silly goofy laughter, but just seeing the joy in moments that otherwise would have sucked the life out of us.
Thank you for the two precious boys you gave me. They reflect you and ultimately God because of all the time you invest in their lives. I love watching you three play, wrestle, giggle, read, talk and even nap.
Happy Anniversary, JB! I love the way you love me. I'm simply mad about you.

You Gotta Laugh: Kenn Kington
I've said it before, I'll say it again. I love to laugh. However, I like good, clean, comedy. The boys and I have several comedians that are on our favorites list. I will be sharing a few of those for you over the next few Sundays, but after all, "This is the day that the Lord has made. I will REJOICE and be glad in it!"

Saturday Savings: Laundry
My budget is so tight it is about to snap. I am trying everything I can to save money so I am starting Saturday Savings. I am posting everything I am trying to save money and I am hoping that you will post the things that you do to save as well.
Today's Saturday Saving Focus: Laundry
1. Wash your clothes in cold water. The clothes come out the same and it obviously saves on the electricity from heating water.
2. Think about what clothes you can dry outside. Personally, I love the way towels and sheets feel when dried outside. If you live in a neighborhood that has restrictive covenants, this may be a little difficult, but I have discovered that I can put a line up in my carport and dry items.
3. Did you know that if you shake out your clothes when you are transfer them from the washer to the dryer they will dry faster? Give it a try.
4. Fabric Softeners:
a. Cut your dryer sheets in half. Works just as well.
b. If you want to avoid buying dryer sheets all together you can make your own very easily: Dip a washcloth in liquid fabric softener, then hang it on a towel rack until dry. When you dry clothes, pop this washcloth in with the load. It can be reused a couple dozen times, then repeat the procedure. A bottle of liquid softener will last almost forever!
c. If the reason you are wanting to use fabric softeners is to prevent static, just wad up some aluminum foil and throw it in with your clothes. Static gone!
5. Go easy on the bleach. Bleach does a great job of whitening, but it also does a great job of deteriorating your clothes.
6. Before you wear dark clothes for the first time wash them in cold salt water. The salt helps set the color. To brighten dark clothes after they have been washed several times, repeat the procedure.
7. If you black clothing starts to look brown after a while, add coffee or strong tea to the rinse water.
8. Do you ever wash your washing machine? It is time. Fill it up with hot water, pour in a bottle of vinegar on the normal cycle and it will eliminate all the soap scum which will ultimately make your clothes cleaner.

Digital History

When I was in seventh grade I had a really good history teacher. I enjoyed listening to him teach. He didn't make me want to go dig through the dusty papers of our Vicksburg Courthouse or anything, but I would say that I was more intrigued than ever before.
Recently I found out about a cool website that the National Archives that eliminates the need for Benadryl when wanting to do a little historical research. It is called the Digital Archives. With some clicks of your mouse, you can explore through Archives of America's history. So far I have been reading about our space exploration, read a letter written to President Carter on a 2 x 4 during the 1980s recession asking for help with mortgages (sound familiar?), and read a great document about Private First Class Carl Bentley, an unarmed medic in Okinawa, who administered first aid and evacuated wounded soldiers while under fire.

When I get up my courage I may read about Vietnam. I have an uncle who served there. Obviously I didn't know him before he went, but I do know that when he returned he wasn't the same. The things he saw, experienced, smelled and felt were burned into his brain. He couldn't seem to get away from them no matter how hard he tried. Not only that but he returned to a Country who did not appreciate the sacrifice that he made. He tried to cope through methods that only made the terrors and horrors he was reliving even worse. Part of me wants to know more about what he fought through to give me the freedoms that I have today, but part of me feels like the horrors I have seen etched on his face and in his life have been all of Vietnam I ever want to experience.

Living With Boys
Living with boys means being awakened from a peaceful sleep by the sound of your house's security system going off. It's deafening sound scaring your whole house and waking up the entire neighborhood (guess we won't be receiving any July 4th party invitations!) and Little Guy running into your bedroom with his ears covered. As you are trying to become coherent enough to dash for the alarm control system, it shuts off and you realize that your husband hasn't left for work yet. (Yes, it is THAT early in the morning). Hubby walks in and I ask him a still incoherent question which finally ends up with him deciding to go check our outside utility doors to see if anyone opened them.
While he is gone I ask Little Guy if he is O.K. and if that really scared him to which he replies, "I was trying practice my fire escape drill and opened my window when that alarm went off...."
That is living with boys.
(Big Guy? Asleep through the entire thing! Soooo like his Daddy!)

Food for your Boo Boo
Black Betty just wrote a post about her daughter needing band-aids when she got hurt. I couldn't believe it because I wrote the following this past weekend after my son and I ran across these.
I have boys. Getting scrapes and cuts is part of their job. Having band-aids is part of my job. When they were really little they used to love cool band-aids: Spiderman, Sponge-Bob, Smiley Faces, even tattoo band-aids. Now they like them, but they don't care as much as long as they don't hurt when you pull them off.
I still keep some cute band-aids in the cabinet for when some of our smallest friends come over. I know that a cute band-aid makes even the toughest boo-boo feel better, but somehow I don't think I could ever convince my boys or any of our kids to wear any of these. Food as band-aids???

Burn yourself cooking breakfast? Bacon and eggs (band-aid)?

I have heard of putting a steak on a black eye, but a beef band-aid?

Bacon strip band-aids?

The only way I'm coming close to sushi is to wear it.
Not eating it!!

A Boy's Love
A boy's love is when he walks past you supposedly with the intention of carrying his sleepover items to his bedroom and all of a sudden whacks you with his pillow and says with his cutest mischievious grin, "Want to pillow fight, punk?"
(FYI... "punk" is not being disrespectful. It is a term we use when we proclaiming a wrestling match.)

A Boy's Love
A boy's love is when he climbs up onto your lap, snuggles in close, wraps his arms around your neck, whispers he loves you and then gives you big old wet willie.

¼ to ½ cup butter, melted
¾ cup finely grated parmesan cheese (the powdery consistency)
Dip each frozen roll in butter, then in cheese (on all sides). Place on greased cookie sheet and let defrost and rise for 6-8 hours. Bake at 375 for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown.

Just Another Manic Monday
Turns out my "to do" list was a little ambitious for Saturday so we knocked off early afternoon and headed to the pool after everyone promised that we would work this week on finishing it. Yesterday the boys and I knocked a few things off the list. The boys gladly took care of scrubbing down the front porch and front porch furniture. I am hoping that the furniture and porch got as much water on it as the boys got on them. Since it was the most dreaded and hated chore, I tackled the million doors in our house... all of them with a hundred grooves. If we ever move, one of the things at the top of my list to check for is doors, cabinets and moldings without a jillion little grooves. Do you know how much dust collects in those little grooves? Cleaning all those grooves is an entire day's work. I am so glad that is over for a little while.
While I was cleaning I ran across the list I made while we were running errands. I have to get a B12 shot every two weeks and it usually requires a little wait. The boys usually pack their Nintendos and a book or two to pass the time. They were playing Animal Crossing together in the backseat and I was completely entertained listening to them talk as they played their game. I wrote down everything that I remembered them saying and I wish I could have remember more of what they said, but I was trying to drive while listening. Quite a feat for someone who can't walk and chew gum! (Yes -- I am a klutz!)
Don't go down the white pipe... there are brown things down there.
Where did you find an axe? I need an axe!
Yo, dude! Over here!
I'm going to see if I can go pay off my mortgage. (And who says video games aren't educational?)
Don't be Johnny Raincloud!
I'm looking for money in these trees. Like that is totally realistic.
I am not annoying. I am being annoyed. Big difference.
I'm going to crush you like the little bug you are.
Mom, I think it is time for me to read more of the s-e-x book. (I think I ran a red light on that one!)

It's A Blog!!
People are always emailing and asking for "that" recipe I had on my blog so I decided to start a blog where I keep all of my recipes. I love trying new recipes. They don't always turn out right, but I still like trying.
I am not very original with names so it is just called Deanna's Corner Cooking. I hope you will drop in for a glass of sweet tea. I've already got some recipes posted for you to try.
Why not making some delicious Homemade Salsa with all the Mississippi tomatoes available at the local farmer's markets? Perfect for the July 4th weekend.
Tired of the same old Saturday breakfast routine? Why not surprise your family with something different like this Nutty Orange Breakfast Cake.
And if you are grilling this weekend the perfect compliment to those ribs are these redneck potatoes!
I'll be adding recipes all the time. Try them and let me know how you like them.

"You're A Winner!"
Who wouldn't want to get an email with that subject title? And it wasn't SPAM! In an earlier blog I told you about the Popr's contest? Well, I won! Out of all the flavors it was hard to decide, but I finally decided on butter and taco. When they arrive and we have a chance to try them out, I will let you know how they are.
