Celebrating Little Guy's 11th

Little Guy's birthday weekend was rained out because of Hurricane Isaac.   He wasn't surprised.   Hurricanes are a pretty normal thing for his birthday.    The biggest hurricane to arrive on his birthday was Hurricane Katrina.

He wanted to invite the guys from his Sunday School class over to spend the night.    He thought it would be fun a great way for them to get to know each other a little better.     Little Guy is low key.  When I went out to buy some special plates and napkins for his birthday he said, "Mom, you wipe your mouth with the napkins and put food on the plates, is there really any need for them to say "Happy Birthday"?"

The guys were not at the house long when we packed them up to head to play frisbee golf.   They loved it.   Little Guy has played a lot, but his friends had never played.    He gave them all starter frisbees and he is hoping it is something they can go and do together on Saturday afternoons every once in a while.

Once they got back home they were ready for supper.    I had plenty of food for all the hungry guys and one of the boys held his plate up in the air and said, "We feast like kings!"   He was so funny!

During supper Little Guy revealed that his best friend was also having her party about three houses down the road.    They couldn't believe it when I suggested that they go ding ditch them.   I had a package of fake moustaches and they wore them as their "disguises".

They spent the next two hours running around outside playing flashlight tag and sardines.   Laughing and hollering and having fun.

Finally we knew they had to come in for showers.   One of the boys just didn't want to take a shower.    I wasn't sure why, but he didn't.    I wasn't sure how to handle that until one of the other boys said, "Dude, you smell like a horse!  Go take a shower."    Thank goodness for positive peer pressure.

We gathered everybody in the living room and laid out their sleeping bags.   We told them we were going to have family prayers.   One of the guys said, "Do we need to leave?"  Hubs said, "No way.  You guys are part of our family."    It was such a sweet time.

The boys all settled into their sleeping bags and talked until they drifted off to sleep.

The next morning they woke up with big appetites and ate three dozen eggs, two dozen biscuits, two dozen cinnamon rolls and sausage.     Hubs said they STILL ate more when they got to Sunday School.   Growing boys are hollow logs I tell you.

Happy 11th birthday, Little Guy!   We love you and we love your friends.

Happy Birthday, Little Guy!

Happy Birthday, Little Guy!

I can't believe you are 11 years old.   Yet when I look at you I realize that my "baby" is turning into a young man more each day.   You are a mere inches from being as tall as I am.   Your feet are much bigger than mine (you wear a men's size 8 now).    With all of your CrossFit workouts you are giving your Dad and brother a run for their money in wrestling matches.   I love that you are so adventurous.    You are not afraid to try new things.    You asked for things for your birthday to fuel your adventurous side.

Once again a hurricane has arrived for your birthday.   This year is Isaac.   Thankfully not as big as Katrina, but still making an impact.    We have always known not to plan a beach vacation around your birthday because a hurricane ALWAYS arrives on your birthday, doesn't it?

Picky Eater?

I have never considered myself a picky eater, but lately I have discovered more and more things I do not like.    Is it kind of strange that my palette has become more discerning as I have gotten older?

1.    Pumpkin.   This is the time of year that everything smells and tastes like pumpkin.   Ewww!

2.    Nutella.    Every other recipe I see lately features Nutella.   I couldn't figure out why I didn't like this until I realized the main ingredient for this was hazlenuts.

3.  Hazlenuts.  Obviously, I don't like this.  And I do not like my coffee to have a nutty flavor either.

4.  Quinoa.   So far I have not eaten it and enjoyed it.   Is it "gross" to me?  Not really, but not worth wasting my time eating it either.

5.  Coconut.   The big trend right now is coconut and coconut oil.   My husband bought granola bars the other day and I took a bite and could tell immediately that it had coconut oil in it.   He argued with me until I forced him to get the wrapper out of the trash and read the ingredients.   It may be healthy, but I do not like the taste of coconut.

6.   Peanuts and peanut butter.   This is a tricky one.   I don't mind the taste of peanut butter.   It is the smell.  Smelling peanuts or peanut butter makes my stomach turn.   This is a recent development for me.

Don't ask why I shared all of that.  It just occurred to me today that I have developed a lot of pickiness about food over the last few years and to my knowledge I have never had such aversions (with the exception of coconut which I have always hated!).

Do you have foods which you hate eating?

Little Guy's Father/Son Weekend

Hubs and Little Guy packed up the car and head out yesterday for their Father/Son weekend.   They were both so excited about this time together.   Saturday was also hubs birthday and Wednesday is Little Guy's birthday, so they thought it was awesome that they got to have time together celebrating just the two of them.

A trip to the Blue Bayou water park...

Supper with our nephew, Jared, and his sweet fiance, Jennifer.

A QUICK trip by the LSU campus.

Student Choir Party

We had a great back to school student choir party at Reunion Beach.     Building sandcastles, ultimate frisbee, football, eating hot dogs and hamburgers and having a good time.   The best part of any choir party is sitting around with a couple of guys with their guitars and singing praise songs.    What an awesome way to start student choir.

Boot Camp

Last night, Little Guy was initiated into middle school at church with "Boot Camp".   It a fun night that our youth pastor plans to introduce all the 6th graders and parents to what goes on in the youth group.    It also is a fun team building event that lets the 6th graders meet the rest of the middle school students.   They participate in a multiple event obstacle course where they must work as a team to complete it.

If the grin that spread from ear to ear was any indication, Little Guy is very happy to be in middle school!

"Mom? Did YOU forget?"

Last night we had an event at church so by the time we got home it was already almost 9:00.    Hubs and I were engrossed in the Olympics (yes I am an Olympics addict).    All of a sudden I was really tired and realized that it was 11:45.   I decided I needed some sleep and headed towards my bedroom when Big Guy stopped me in the hallway.

"Mom?  Are you going to bed?"

"Yes, sweetheart.  I am tired."

"But you can't go to bed.   We haven't had family prayers."

Oh... he was right.

"Go get your brother and I'll get your Dad."

We met in the living room and Big Guy said, "Little Guy is sound asleep on his bed.   I think he fell asleep reading his book."

We had our family prayer time and I went to bed.

.....

Sitting on the couch this morning sipping on my first cup of morning coffee, a very groggy Little Guy walked in to the living room.

The first words out of his mouth?

"Mom?   We didn't have family prayers last night before I went to sleep."

Out of all the things we are trying to teach our boys and traditions we have tried to establish, I am so happy that our time of family prayer is one that is as important to them as it is to us.

Wedded Bliss

Our "son" and "daughter" got married today.   That isn't as weird as it sounds.   We adopted two college students about three years ago and along the way they fell in love and today they got married.

Their wedding was as beautiful and special as they are.    They had a foot washing as part of their ceremony to symbolize their willingness to serve each other.    Friends played guitar and violin as part of the pre-ceremony music.   Pews were decorated with wild flowers and framed photos of our sweet Daniel and Meagan while they were dating.    Everything was very relaxed and had a family atmosphere.    It was perfect and "so them".

We can't wait for the new Mr. and Mrs. to get home from their honeymoon so we can have the over for supper!

Preparing for Catastrophe

six bottles of water
2 bottles of sweet tea
two flash lights
various bags of chips and snacks
batteries
radio
bottle of Advil

I decided to clean out my hall closet today to see what school supplies I had left over from last year and what supplies I might need.   In the process of cleaning and organizing, I found the things listed above.    They weren't all in one place, but stashed all over among the sheets and blankets.

As I kept pulling out each random discovery I could not figure out why all of it was there.   Big Guy walked through and picked up a bottle of water.

"Do you have any idea why this is all stuck in the linen closet?"

"Sure.  Little Guy puts it there so that we will have access to it when we are hiding here during tornado warnings.   If the news mentions we need it, he puts it in here."

As I tucked all of his supplies back into a special box and put it into the closet, I prayed that I can pack his heart with the knowledge that God is our greatest protection.

You are my defender and protector, You are my God.  In You I trust!

He Fought The Good Fight

Two nights ago I had a dream that I received "the text" from my friend Dianna that said our sweet Cade had gone to heaven.    I woke up and went immediately to pray.    God has talked to me this way before so I knew this was his way of preparing me.

We got up today and packed the car to head to Biloxi.   Big Guy had a State Archery competition for the weekend.     We were in the middle of a blinding rain when I realized that something was wrong.    Dianna confirmed that I was right with two words, "He's gone."

We pulled over and shared with our boys.   After spending some time in prayer we started a very quiet drive back home.

Our emotions are so mixed tonight, but as we had family prayers Big Guy summed it up best when he prayed, "Lord, thank you for answering my prayers for Cade, but I didn't know it was going to hurt so much."

Please keep our precious friends, Danny, Dianna and Calli in your prayers as they (and we all) adjust to life without Cade.

Cade, you fought the good fight!
You finished the race!
You kept the faith!  (2 Timothy 4:7)
Enjoy heaven!
We miss you already.

Branded By The Cross

This is Laminin. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this molecule, Laminin is the protein that holds human beings together. Do you notice its shape? Isn't it amazing that God would think so far in the future, and make the very thing that makes us think of Jesus, make up and play a crucial role in how we are formed? God formed you to not only live as an image of Christ, but to never escape the fact that you are HIS! We are branded by the Cross! "He is before all things, and in him all things hold together" Colossians 1:17

Hump Day of Summer

Tomorrow is July 4th.   While everyone is thinking fireworks, grilling, parades and "Happy Birthday, USA!', in the back of my mind I always think of it as the hump day of summer.    As soon as this holiday is over the stores will clear the shelves and pack them with Back to School items.   Sale papers will start coming out with weekly sales preparing for the first day of school.

You might be thinking: "You homeschool.  Why are you freaked out?"   I will tell you.   I am NOT ready!   Can we just take a vacation from this year?  No??  Shoot!

Summer..... SLOW DOWN!!!!

Best. Week. Ever.

Our church hosted the Chick-Fil-A WinShape Camp.    They describe it as the best week ever and it really was!    There is no way to describe just how fun and amazing it was so I am just going to show you some pictures from the week.   I am also going to let you know that if you have a child who has completed 1st - 6th grade and live in the Jackson Metro area you should mark your calendars for June 24-28, 2013 for next year's WinShape Camp!!

A New Obsession

Anytime the boys mention something new they are interested in doing we try to find a way to let them try it.   Lately Little Guy has been setting up homemade courses in the back yard and playing frisbee golf.    We have no idea where this new obsession came from, but he has just decided he loves it.

Last Saturday hubs told the boys he wanted to go fishing and asked if they wanted to do anything else and immediately Little Guy said, "Can we go find a place to play frisbee golf?"

Since nothing makes my husband happier than spending time with his boys, he immediately said yes.   They got into a big discussion about how they only had one frisbee, but to play frisbee golf you needed a putter, driver, and midrange frisbee.    They went out to our workshop and gathered up all the baseball equipment they were finished with and went to our local used sports store.   They traded all that equipment in and used the money they received to buy the frisbees they needed.    Smart guys.

I can't wait to go with them next time!!

The Armor

Little Guy loves his Sunday School class.   Look at that background.   Does that look like any Sunday School class you ever went to as a child?   Me either.   One day I will go and take photos of the entire room so you can see how incredible it is.  The entire room is decorated like a castle.    The theme for the fifth grade year of Sunday School is knights and castles.

Hubs snapped this picture during class yesterday as they were asked to create the entire armor of God.   They have been studying this for a while and this was their review day.

As you can see, the guys were proud of their "win".

Are You Lukewarm?

I absentmindedly grabbed my coffee cup for that one last sip before I finished loading the dishwasher.   Yuck!  That was sip wasn't hot.  It wasn't cold.   It was lukewarm.

It was yet another reminder from the Lord of what I have been studying.    " I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other!  So, because you are lukewarm--neither hot nor cold--I am about to spit you out of my mouth."   Revelation 3:15-16

I have been stuck on this verse for about two weeks now.     As I started reading and studying this I ran across Francis Chan's description of a lukewarm Christian.    Have you ever read it?    After you read this you will know why I have been stuck on this concept and challenge for the past two weeks.

ARE YOU A LUKEWARM CHRISTIAN?
by Francis Chan

1. Lukewarm people attend church fairly regularly. It is what is expected of them, what they believe “good Christians” do, so they go. Isaiah 29:13

2. Lukewarm people give money to charity and to the church as long as it doesn’t impinge on their standard of living. If they have a little extra and it is easy and safe to give, they do so, After all, God loves a cheerful giver, right? 1 Chronicles 21:24, Luke 21:1-4

3. Lukewarm people tend to choose what is popular over what is right when they are in conflict. They desire to fit in both at church and outside of church; they care more about what people think of their actions (like church attendance and giving) than what God thinks of their hearts and lives. Luke 6:26, Revelation 3:1, Matthew 23:5-7 4.

4: Lukewarm people don’t really want to be saved from their sin; they want only to be saved from the penalty of their sin. They don’t genuinely hate sin and aren’t truly sorry for it; they’re merely sorry because God is going to punish them. Lukewarm people don’t really believe that this new life Jesus offers is better than the old sinful one. John 10:10, Romans 6:1-2.

5. Lukewarm people are moved by stories of people who do radical things for Christ, yet they do not act. They assume such action is for “extreme” Christians, not average ones. Lukewarm people call “radical” what Jesus expected of all His followers. James 1:22, James 4:17, Matthew 21:28-31

6. Lukewarm people rarely share their faith with their neighbors, coworkers, or friends. They do not want to be rejected, nor do they want to make people uncomfortable by talking about private issues like religion. Matthew 10:32-33

7. Lukewarm people gauge their morality or “goodness” by comparing themselves to the secular world. They feel satisfied that while they aren’t as hard-core for Jesus as so-and-so, they are nowhere as horrible as the guy down the street. Luke 18:11-12

8. Lukewarm people say they love Jesus, and He is, indeed, a part of their lives, their money, and their thoughts, but he isn’t allowed to control their lives. Luke 9:57-62

9. Lukewarm people love God, but they do not love Him all their heart, soul, and strength. They would be quick to assure you they try to love God that much, but that sort of total devotion isn’t really possible for the average person; its only for pastors and missionaries and radicals. Matthew 22:37-38

10. Lukewarm people love others but do not seek to love others as much as they love themselves. Their love for others is typically focused on those who love them in return, like family, friends, and other people they know and connect with. There is a little love left over for those who cannot love them back, much less for those who intentionally slight them, who kids are better athletes than theirs, or with whom conversations are awkward or uncomfortable. Their love is highly conditional and very selective, and generally comes with strings attached. Matthew 5:43-47, Luke 14:12-14

11. Lukewarm people will serve God and others, but there are limits to how far they will go or how much time, money, and energy they are willing to give. Luke 18:21-25

12. Lukewarm people think about life on earth much more often than eternity in heaven. Daily life is mostly focused on today’s to-do list, this week’s schedule, and next month’s vacation. Rarely, if ever do they intently consider the life to come. Philippians 3:18-20

13. Lukewarm people are thankful for their luxuries and comforts, and rarely consider trying to give as much as possible to the poor. Matthew 25:34, 40, Isaiah 58:6-7

14. Lukewarm people do whatever is necessary to keep themselves from feeling too guilty. They want to do the bare minimum, to be “good enough” without requiring too much of them. 1 Chronicles 29:14, Matthew 13:44-46

15. Lukewarm people are continually concerned with playing it safe; they are slaves to the god of control. This focus on safe living keeps them sacrificing and risking for God. Matthew 10:28

16. Lukewarm people feel secure because they attend church, made a profession of faith at age twelve, were baptized, come from a Christian family, vote Republican, or live in America.

17. Luke warm people do not live by faith; their lives are structured so they never have to. They don’t have to trust God if something unexpected happens-they have their savings account. They don’t need God to help them—they have their retirement plan in place. They don’t genuinely seek out what life God would have them live—they have life figured and mapped out. They don’t depend on God on a daily basis-their refrigerators are full and, for the most part, they are in good health. The truth is, their lives wouldn’t look much different if they suddenly stopped believing in God. Luke 12:16-21

18. Lukewarm people probably drink and swear less than average, but besides that, they really aren’t very different from your typical unbeliever. They equate their partially sanitized lives with holiness, but they couldn’t be more wrong. Matthew 23:25-28, Luke 14:34-35

Nothing Says Summer Like...

... Shoving all the school curriculum onto their appropriate shelves and throwing away all the used workbooks.

... Packing the game drawer.  I don't know what normal families use their end table for, but in our house it is just another place for games.   During the school year I keep logic games for the boys to choose from, but now that school is over I have cleaned all of that out and have restocked.    You can find card games like Phase 10, UNO, Scrabble Slam and Slap.    There are also games like Bananagrams, Rummicube, Dominoes and Rack-O.    After Christmas I pick up daily calendars which feature puzzles.  I keep stacks of these in the drawer too so that the boys can play Hangman or word games.

... My husband says he knows it is summer when I make his favorite frozen orange salad.  He loves it.   I made one last night and put it in the freezer.   Every night after supper he will pull it out and get a piece until it is gone.

Donald's Favorite Frozen Orange Salad

Ingredients:
60 Ritz crackers, finely crushed
1/4 lb. margarine, melted
1/4 cup sugar
zest of one orange
1 (6 ounce) can unsweetened frozen orange juice
1 (12 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
2 (11 ounce) cans mandarin oranges, drained
8 ounce carton Cool Whip, thawed

Directions:
Mix together the crushed crackers, margarine, zest of one orange and sugar. Reserve a few crumbs for garnish and press remaining crackers into the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch pan. Blend thawed orange juice with condensed milk. Fold in mandarin oranges and thawed Cool Whip. Pour mixture over crust. top with reserved crumbs. Freeze until serving. Return to freezer to store.

... Sitting outside with the boys at night until we can't stand the mosquitoes anymore.

... The "summer list".   We haven't started the summer list, but we are going to get to it soon!

What says summer to you??
