Did I Say That Out Loud?

Anne Jackson posted a question on her blog FlowerDust that really caught my attention, and apparently a lot of other people's attention as well.

"What is something you feel you can't say in church, or around other Christians?"

Some of the responses she has gotten include:

  • I’d rather look like a good christian than put in the time and effort to actually be one.
  • You rock, ’cause God didn’t have time to create a nobody and you are awesome!
  • I currently feel NO connection to God when I pray or read the bible.
  • I don’t often tell anybody what I really believe about women in ministry - it’s too heavy for most people and honestly, I think most don’t want to hear it.
  • When I say “I’ll pray for you.” I don’t usually mean it. I have been a Christian for 27 years and I still don’t understand the point of praying.
  • I like to swear. It makes me feel better.
  • Billary and Bammamamma are from satan - there, I said it
  • How come pastors don’t live what they teach?

How about you? What would you say?

Christians who say that others are or aren't Christians tick me off to no end. Such as the second to last comment. Who are they to judge that Hillary and Obama aren't Christians?

I would say that gossip is as much of a sin as anything else... Churches are torn apart by gossip and erroneous judgement. Keep your lip zipped.

i feel like i am surrounded by hypocrites, and i feel like church is an overly done social gathering to compare who's car and house are better than someone else's...i feel like the true meaning of it is lost.

there, i said it. :D

good post.

I wouldn't think anything couldn't be said if it was honest struggling with faith and doubt issues. Churches that don't allow that, shouldn't get your membership. Thankfully, mine does and we talk a lot about those things. The opposite of faith isn't doubt, it is certainty. So having doubt is part of having faith. Doubt conversations should be a part of a healthy faith.

Just being mean, well, keep that to yourself, but that isn't a church thing. :)

That list is sad. Not because of the content. But because they think they can't say them.

Feeling no connection to God sometimes is NORMAL. Saying it out loud would let the person hear from others that they have dry times, too, and learn how to continue to pray and read and know that the dry time will end.

Pastors/Priests/Ministers are flawed stupid normal human beings just like we are. The Disciples were a bunch of bumbling idiots at times. Expecting our leaders to be better than we are only sets them up for failure and that isn't Christian.

Swearing isn't a sin. Go ahead.

When you say "I'll pray for you" you just did. Cut yourself a break. You didn't promise to pray daily for them for an hour a day.

I think we try to make "religion" way too hard. The Great Commandment is all we need to follow and leave the rest to God. We don't need to figure it out for God. God can handle it. Really. ;)
