Andy - Still "Undaunted"

Andy is being moved to a regular room. If all goes as planned, this will be a 7-10 day stay before he leaves Walter Reed.

Andy smiled some today and even laughed a little at times. He's watched a movie or two and told his Dad that he wanted to watch Hogan's Heroes at bedtime. Andy has talked alot lately about all kinds of things, but especially about the future. Andy still seems undaunted by it.

He was visited by a 2-star General today. His Dad said that he could see Andy "slip back into his uniform" mentally when the general stepped in his room. He straightens his posture (to whatever degree he can), he gets his manners in place, his is all about the yes sir and no sir and he's tough as nails.

Andy is beginning to look better -- his lips have healed, his complexion is improving, and the color is returning to his face.

When Andy leaves Walter Reed, he has three units to choose from that are specially staffed and equipped to deal with spinal cord injuries in the Army. All three 30-bed units are located in Texas--Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. That's sure to put a smile on Texas-boy's face.

That's really great news. God truly does answer prayers. I know you, your family and friends are so happy for his progress.

I've been following Andy's fate since that initial announcement. My gut aches for this personal account you've been given. I am married to a military pilot who flies medical evacuations from time to time from Ramstein to Walter Reed. While the odds are it wasn't my husband flying Andy... I still think about how the stories are all the same...

My husband often comes home after one of those flights severely depressed. He talks about the kids (18, 19 year olds) coming home with missing limbs.... the times he loses a patient because they physically can't get to the next hospital fast enough...

Each soldier (passenger) he feels so responsible for. The medical team is in the back but ultimately he is the senior officer in command of the flight. The med-evac mission in Ramstein is emotionally toiling.

So I follow Andy's progress and am saddened. And then I am encouraged. Andy is a wonderful example of the good in people. The good that is inevitably in all of us but we sometimes supress.

May we all live by Andy's example of living life without regret, without fear, without dispair.
