"Now The World Don't Move To the Beat Of Just One Drum"

The other night we were flipping through the channels and saw the Jon & Kate Plus 8 television show. We stopped for a few minutes because they decided to go to a local pottery shop. I thought, "This should be interesting --- that lady is going to freak out." If you watch you know she is a little OCD about messes.

After a few minutes we switched the stations, but not before the boys said, "Hey! We haven't been to the pottery store in a while. Can we go tomorrow?"

Sounded way better than laundry or chores so off we went. Our favorite pottery shop is Different Strokes. The first thirty minutes we are there was spent trying to decide what to paint. (It is kind of like me and shoe shopping... so many choices!)

Little Guy spotted a shelf full of crosses and said, "Mom, I could paint a cross to put on your new wall of crosses." I tried to direct him to a small cross, but his eyes were glazed over (yes, I know that is a pottery pun). He was gazing at a huge ornamental cross at the back of the shelf. A very, very, very detailed cross that would take a professional hours to paint. (Hence the photo because I knew you wouldn't believe me.)

Let me explain... most kids would slap paint on their pottery and be ready for the next piece. Not my boys. They make the most of their painting experience. Painstakingly picking out their pieces, paint colors and using just the right brushes. This is not just painting. It is art.

Meanwhile Big Guy struggled for a while with his choice, but finally picked out a plate with a beautiful cross detail in the center. I was so excited because I really loved that plate and in Big Guy's hands it would turn out amazing.

For the next two hours the boys were in painting heaven. The only time I heard them talk was when Big Guy said he wished he had brought his iPod because he thought it would help him concentrate better.

Me? Don't ask me why I didn't think to bring a book!

They were so beautiful when they were finished that I just can't wait to see them when they come out of the kiln and are ready to be picked up. I'm already eyeing a spot to put them on my wall.

What FUN!!! I would love to take my girls to do something like that.

And on the topic of J&K+8... I watched an eppisode the other day where they went to a bakery to decorate their birthday cupcakes and she wouldn't let them do it. Jeez louise - go by some unmatching crap clothes at goodwill and let the kids live a little!!

Sweet Pea went to Harry the Potter for her birthday party last year and she's thinking about doing it this year.

I think it's cool that, not only do your boys enjoy it, they take their time and do it right.

What a great idea, and that is great that they enjoyed it. I am sure those will be treasures for years to come.

That is my 7 year old daughter's favorite thing to do. Her birthday party 2 years ago was at Different Strokes and she loves to go to Harry the Potter too. I also try to steer her toward a simpler project, but she always wants something more detailed...always the last one working on her project. The book idea is a good one.

Good stuff! The missus loves Jon & kate Plus 8, but I told her if she thinks we're having eight kids, she's out of her mind.

The round one reminds me of the pinwheels - which I hear Photog-Mama is still waiting on her pic you took at the wedding!

Be sure and post follow-up photos!

Alyssa and I have gone to Paache's, one of our pottery shops, a few times this summer.Thankfully they were doing no sitting fee. She's done some nice pieces and I did a plate the last time with a fleur di lis in the middle. I love the idea of the cross.

Cool ... you'll have to post pictures when you hang their pottery on the wall.
